Canadian Parents for French Congratulates the Liberal Party and Prime Minister Mark Carney
April 29, 2025
Canadian Parents for French (CPF) extends its sincere congratulations to the Liberal Party of Canada and to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who will form the next federal government following yesterday’s election. We offer our full collaboration to the incoming government in strengthening Canada’s linguistic duality, advancing official language education, and ensuring that all youth can learn French and thrive in both of Canada’s official languages.
“These elections took place in an unprecedented context for Canada, highlighting the need for renewed national unity, strength, and international leadership. Canada’s official languages — French and English — are key pillars of our identity and critical assets for our future,” said Derrek Bentley, CEO of CPF. “Bilingualism is not just a cultural advantage; it is a strategic resource that opens doors for Canadian youth at home and abroad.”
Throughout the election campaign, CPF emphasized that the Future Needs French, highlighting the importance of strong federal leadership in expanding French Second Language (FSL) education programs, supporting the growth of French Immersion, and ensuring universal access to quality French-language learning opportunities across the country. We are encouraged by the broad consensus among Canadians on the value of official languages, and we look forward to working with the new government to translate this into concrete action.
In particular, we urge the government to prioritize measures that will:
- Increase investment in French Second Language programs at all levels of education;
- Continue to address the retention of qualified French language teachers across the country;
- Set ambitious targets for official language bilingualism rates in the Canadian population;
- Promote initiatives that strengthen bilingualism as a cornerstone of Canada’s international engagement and economic development.
CPF also congratulates all elected Members of Parliament, including many long-time allies of French-English bilingual education and linguistic duality. We recognize and applaud the dedication of all candidates who worked tirelessly to engage Canadians — including French-speaking and bilingual communities — throughout the campaign.
Finally, CPF extends its heartfelt thanks to outgoing NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh for his many years of public service. His leadership in promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity has made a lasting impact on Canada’s political landscape.
Canadian Parents for French stands ready to collaborate with the government and all parliamentarians to ensure that Canada’s official languages remain a vibrant and dynamic part of Canada’s future for all those who call Canada home.
